World Press Freedom Day: Protest, Walkout, Arrest And A Possible Deportation


The World Press Freedom Day Conference held in Maldives was disrupted on Thursday by a protest outside the conference hall and a walkout by around ten journalists. Away from the conference, Aishath Aniya was arrested in relation to an article she wrote in Minivan Daily last month, which was seen to be "against Islam."

The protest, which was held by women calling for freedom of expression, was ended five minutes after it started at 8:30am when police intervened and confiscated banners.

One hour later ten journalists from Minivan Daily and E-Sandhaanu magazine walked out of the conference hall as President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom began his keynote speech.

At the same time outside the Minivan Daily office, a short walk from the conference hall, Aishath Aniya was arrested and lifted into the back of a police van in connection with an article she wrote in the paper published March 20. [Read more on Minivan News]
