Ministry of Information, Arts and Culture has announced that a new local daily newspaper named ‘Sangu’ has been submitted for registration.
According to an official from the Information Ministry, the submission was made by former Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) activist turned Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) member and currently a member of People’s Association, Mohamed Ikram. Ikram had earlier worked in ‘Adduvas’ as well as DRP publication ‘Hama Roalhi’.
The official from the Information Ministry said that ‘Sangu’ is now in the last stages of registration.
“As soon as we receive the address of the publication we will finish the registration of ‘Sangu’,” said the official. “The delay in the registration is because we still haven’t received the information.”
A monthly magazine had earlier been published under the name ‘Sangu’ in the year 1990. The magazine was published twice every month. The magazine was closed down by the government after it published some articles alleged to encourage rifts between the citizens and government.
Presently Maldives has 6 daily newspapers and 12 weekly magazines. There are also three registered daily newspapers that have not been published so far.
