Special Majlis passes amendment to allow 18 years and above to vote in referendum

The People’s Special Majlis on Sunday passed an amendment allowing those above 18 years of age to vote in the referendum to decide upon a system of government.

Newly elected Speaker for the interim constitutional parliament, Gasim Ibrahim, put it to a vote despite the fact that his predecessor had dismissed the amendment as a ‘breach of the constitution’. The vote was taken after the Speaker refused to consider a new proposal and despite protests by Information Minister Mohamed Nasheed who asked on what authority that the new Speaker was overturning the previous ruling.

The amendment was passed by the Majlis by the lowest possible vote, winning exactly the 57 votes required. There were 85 members in attendance when the vote was called for.

Even though none of the members voted against the amendment, 16 members were undecided and 12 members did not vote.
