Maldives 'still safe for tourists' despite bombing

Authorities in the Maldives say the islands remain a safe travel destination in the wake of its first terrorist attack at the weekend.

Two men have been arrested by police investigating a bomb blast in a park in the capital Male.

Two Britons, two Japanese and eight Chinese tourists were hurt.

It was the first time a bomb had exploded in the Maldives.

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom blamed what he called selfish people calling for a tourism boycott.

Dissidents view Mr Gayoom as a dictator, and political parties have only been legal since 2005.

The country's tourist resorts are mostly located on outlying islands, away from the capital.

The Maldives Government says the islands are still perfectly safe to visit.
