The Maldives: Liberal Democracy or a Jihadist Entrepôt?

The Maldives approaches a critical juncture in its development. Will it become a stable liberal democracy, or a security risk? Reformists claim the Maldives could become the first liberal democracy in the Islamic world. Last November pro-democracy groups demonstrated to create the conditions for an ‘orange revolution’. But the Maldives faces a paradox, in that increasing economic prosperity is not yet matched by political reform.
